Slot milling cutter

Slot milling cutter is a special cutting tool used to process grooves, keyways or grooves on the surface of workpieces, and is widely used in the field of mechanical processing. The following is a main description of slot milling cutter:

1. Basic definition
Slot milling cutter (Slot Drill or Slot Milling Cutter) is a type of end mill designed for slotting, side milling or step surface processing. Its characteristic is that it can cut in both axial and radial directions at the same time, and is suitable for processing closed or semi-closed grooves.

2. Structural features
Number of blades: usually 2 blades (double blades) or 3 blades, 2 blades are more common, which is convenient for chip removal and chip holding.

Cutting direction: Some slot milling cutters can perform axial and radial cutting (center cutting) at the same time without pre-drilling.

Helix angle: straight blade or spiral blade (30°~45° helix angle), spiral blade can reduce vibration and improve surface quality.

Material: high-speed steel (HSS), cemented carbide (tungsten steel) or coated blades (such as TiN, TiAlN coating), cemented carbide tools have better wear resistance.

3. Classification and use
Keyway milling cutter: double-edged, end edge over center, suitable for processing keyway and other closed slots.

T-slot milling cutter: used for processing T-slots, first use end mill to open straight slots, then use T-cutters to expand slots.

Saw blade milling cutter: thin design, used for narrow slots or cutting workpieces.

Round nose milling cutter: with arc at the bottom of the slot, used for processing arc slots to avoid stress concentration.

4. Processing advantages
Efficient slotting: slot width processing can be completed in one feed (when the design is the same width as the workpiece).

Smooth chip removal: double-edged design or spiral groove structure helps iron chips to be discharged and reduce blockage.

High precision: suitable for high-precision slot width (such as H7 tolerance) and surface roughness requirements (Ra1.6~3.2μm).

5. Application scenarios
Metal processing: milling keyways, oil grooves, water grooves of steel, aluminum, cast iron and other materials.

Mold manufacturing: processing cooling water channels or guide grooves in molds.

Woodworking/Plastics: Can also be used for grooving non-metallic materials.

6. Precautions for use
Cutting parameters: Adjust the rotation speed and feed speed according to the material (such as high speed and large feed when processing aluminum alloy).

Cooling and lubrication: It is recommended to use cutting fluid (especially for deep groove processing) to avoid overheating and tool wear.

Tool clamping: Ensure clamping rigidity to prevent vibration from causing chipping.

7. Differences from other milling cutters
Compared with end mills: The end blades of water slot milling cutters can be center cut, while end mills usually require pre-drilling.

Compared with drill bits: Drill bits only cut axially, while water slot milling cutters can mill laterally.

Summary
Water slot milling cutters are efficient and versatile slot processing tools. When selecting, the number of blades, material and geometric parameters must be matched according to the material, slot depth and precision requirements. Reasonable use can significantly improve processing efficiency and quality.
